Four Lane Ends Station, Newcastle Metro
6m dia, Corten Steel
The sculpture located in the concourse of the station consists of a 6m dia. ring of Corten. In the outside vertical side of this ring is neon tube, which responds to the noise (vibrations) of the trains as they enter and depart from the station. With no trains in the vicinity, the neon shines uninterrupted, but as trains approach or depart the neon switches on and off (pulsing) the frequency of the pulsing being proportional to the noise of the train. Therefore as the noise of the train increases, the frequency of the pulsing increases. The noise of the trains is monitored by vibration sensors that are attached to the track.
